Seven people you HAVE to meet if you’re looking for an internship

Looking to break into the advertising industry? It can be tough, we know. That's why we assembled these seven knowledable and diverse professionals to share their stories and give you valuable advice on how to get an internship. On November 9th, they'll be at The Hilton Garden Inn for our annual Internship Event. The best part? You, as a student, can attend for free. 


Bri’on Whiteside, Education Reporter, The Blade

At 24, Bri’on Whiteside is the Education Reporter at The Blade. Her journey in Journalism first began in June 2017, shortly after graduating from Bowling Green State University, May 2017. Bri’on is most passionate about mindfulness and story-telling. As an undergraduate student, she focused on exploring both of these passions through poetry and non-fiction writing.

Beyond her journalism career, Bri’on has worked as a freelance writer since 2015, creating content for the following publications: A Magazine, The Odyssey Online, and The GirlMob.

In her spare time, she looks for opportunities to engage with humanity whether it be through activities with loved ones or volunteering her time with varying organizations.


Haley Taylor, Radio Producer and Host, WGTE

Haley Taylor is a Radio Producer and Host for Toledo's local National Public Radio station, WGTE FM 91. She hosts the classical music programs Morning Classics, Evening Classics, Classical Overnights and produces the award-winning weekly arts and culture series The Rough Draft Diaries. Haley's work, such as The Rough Draft Diaries, airs locally in Northwest Ohio but has also aired in stations around the nation through programs like PRX Remix. Haley is a graduate of Spring Arbor University in Michigan, where she majored in Communication Studies and minored in Music. While at Spring Arbor, she created and administered a popular podcasting series; produced a radio news feature that won first place in the Michigan Association of Broadcasters College Awards, and was editor-in-chief of the college newspaper. For two years she was an on-air personality for 106.9 Home.fm.


Greg Shaw, Video Producer, Hart

Born and raised in Harrisburg, PA, Gregory Shaw studied video production at Capital Area School for the Arts before attending Bowling Green State University where he studied Film Production. His professional experience comes from working numerous years as a producer in both the film and television industries. He currently is a video Producer/Editor for Hart, a full-service digital marketing agency. “Inspiration is the spark. Passion is the driving force.” 


Anita Holman,Executive Creative Director & Brand Strategist, Interrupt

Anita brings a unique fusion of creative and strategy, with nearly 20 years of agency experience in transforming Fortune 1000 brands. She is a trend spotter, seeing changes in the world and how our client’s might benefit from them. She’s a problem solver who thrives on challenges and excels in developing creative solutions that enhance a clients’ brand position and market value. She understands that exceptional creative is grounded in strong strategic thinking and is driven to find that ”a-ha“ moment that pushes clients ahead of their competitors. Anita’s strengths include an innate ability to visualize the problem, map a solution and execute flawlessly. 

 Her personal brand is a blend of “Investigator and Catalyst”, demonstrated by either trying to figure something out or put something into action. As a graduate of the design program at Bowling Green State University, Anita learned the value of strong design and now shares the love for brand development that with her team and students considering a design career. 


Sara Bowyer, Channel Marketing Manager at Owens Corning

Sara has over 15 years in marketing experience in both corporate and agency environments. The last 6 years have been focused on delivering strategic solutions for building materials clients including Masonite Doors, Huber Engineered Woods and most recently, Owens Corning. Process and purpose keep her on track in her career, volunteer activities and family. Sara is a Toledo native and needs to find a way to make more time in a day to rule the marketing world and spend time with her husband, Chris and daughters, Lorelei (4) and Harper (19 months). 

Sara was on the AAF Board of Governors from 2004-2013, serving as President, 2009-2010. She is currently the co-chair for American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. 


Emily Callahan, Designer, MadHouse

Emily Callahan is a designer at Madhouse. Her professional focus is multi-faceted, incorporating skills in print design, front-end development, creative copywriting, and illustration. Emily holds a BFA in Visual Communication Design from Kent State University. She joined the Madhouse team in 2017. 


Jerry Brown, CEO, MadAve

MadAveGroup is a family of globally recognized marketing agencies. As CEO, Jerry is responsible for directing the agency’s overall growth, ensuring its financial stability, and protecting its culture. 

In 1989, Jerry founded the company that would become BusinessVoice, a pioneer in the caller experience marketing industry. He formed the digital marketing agency WebArt in 2004, and in 2012 created SensoryMax, an agency specializing in multi-sensory marketing. Three years later, he introduced MadAve Marketing Management and started design2influence, a branding, advertising and design firm. Together, the agencies make up MadAveGroup. 

Jerry also created The MadAveCollective, an agency that provides branding, advertising and design services for budget-strapped non-profits while, at the same time, helping develop the careers of aspiring creative professionals. 

Jerry has served other organizations as well. He's a founding member of the Customer Experience Marketing Alliance, a global partnership of premier point-of-contact marketing agencies. He was a pioneering member of the Experience Marketing Association and has served as its Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and Marketing
Chair. Jerry has also worked with the Toledo Area Business Network, the Chief Executive Boards, and the Young Entrepreneur Society, and was a trustee for the Huntington Community Center. 

He also served as President of the Toledo Chapter of The American Advertising Federation and, in 2012, he received that organization’s highest honor, The Silver Medal Award. In 2016, Jerry was inducted into the Entrepreneurial & Business Excellence (EBE) Hall of Fame. 

Jerry’s professional passions have always been sales and marketing. He enjoys a reputation as a trusted advisor, serving either as an Account Executive, a Business Development Strategist, or as a Marketing Consultant for a few of the firm’s premier clients. 

In demand as a speaker and trainer, Jerry has addressed dozens of conferences, seminars and symposiums, and conducted workshops and training sessions for companies throughout the country. His areas of expertise include marketing; communication; tactical, strategic, and consultative selling; and business development. 

Many of Jerry’s colleagues and clients have been with him for more than a quarter century. They appreciate his skill at gaining authentic dialog and his rigid adherence to “truth over harmony” communication.
